How to choose 1K, 2K, or 4K textures

Choose texture resolution from camera distance, asset size, and memory budget instead of exporting 4K by default.

Production problem

Higher resolution helps only when the viewer can see the detail and the platform can afford the texture memory.

Decision checklist

  • Use 1K for distant or small repeated surfaces.
  • Use 2K for common hero-adjacent props and mid-size surfaces.
  • Use 4K only for close hero surfaces or large archviz materials.

Common failure cases

  • Oversized maps waste memory and streaming bandwidth.
  • Undersized normal and roughness maps can shimmer or blur material response.

Production FAQ

Should all channels have the same resolution?

For default handoff, yes. Downscale only with a deliberate pipeline rule.

Is 4K always better?

No. It can slow loading and provide no visual gain at distance.
